Letter dated 1856 (2 pages). Remarks include comments about an upcoming visit to the family home in Odalen, Norway by their

Peder Sather (1810-1886) was born on the farm Nedre Sæther in Odal, Norway. In 1832, he emigrated to New York City where he
worked at a lottery office. In 1845, he opened a small exchange brokerage. When gold was discovered in California, the well-known
banker Francis Drexel invited Sather and his partner Edward Church to establish a bank in San Francisco. When Drexel and Church
died, Sather went on as a banker on Montgomery Street for the rest of his life. In 1860, he became a trustee of the College
of California, which in 1868 became the University of California, Berkeley.
